The practicing of dentistry has progressed
from a marketplace skill, as it was practiced
from the second millenium B.C. through
medieval times, to a scientific process
implemented by professionals who integrate
medical training and biomechanical skills in
order to provide the best dental health care
the world has ever known.
In medieval times dentistry was practiced
by guilds of barber-surgeons, tooth drawers,
and charlatans whose dental education was
usually minimal or nonexistent. In 1728 the
Father of Modern Dentistry, Pierre Fouch-
ard, published Le Ghirurgien Dentiste
which served as a catalyst to further the
advancement of dentistry toward its estab-
lishment and recognition as a profession.

In the years we have been at this institution we have had the opportunity
to study with many instructors. The most outstanding among them in our
opinion is Dr. Ronald F. Gravitz. The quahty of his instruction, the extent of
his knowledge and skills and most importantly his rapport with students and
patients alike has endeared him in our hearts. With his departure from this
University we feel that the student body is losing a most valuable asset. We

ROSEMARY MEEK
At this year's end we APT students are faced with a true
loss in the clinic. Rosemary has decided that the time has
come for her to retire. Rosemary has meant a lot to all of us.
Not only did she maintain the best stocked clinic in the
School for us, but she also made available all the latest
information coming down the grapevine. Seriously, we
have benefited from the services of one who was truly
interested in each student and who did all she could to help
us through our clinical experience. Her cookies and snacks
also added to the warm atmosphere of our lab, not to men-
tion the Christmas parties.
Rosemary, we will miss you very much; and we want to
wish you the best retirement ever. Thank you for your
untiring efforts.

Gamma Pi Delta Prosthodontic Honor Society was chartered in 1965 as
an honorary student organization with scholarship and interest in the
field of prosthetic dentistry as a basis for admission. As a result of the
first two years of academic achievements in Fixed and Removable
Prosthodontics, Juniors and Seniors are eligible for membership in the
Society.
Gamma Pi Delta's objective is the advancement of prosthetic dentistry
through lectures, table clinics, and other academic activities, with the
purpose of increasing knowledge of and stimulating the creative
interests of the members and the dental profession.

The Gorgas Odontological Society was organized in 1915 as a student
organization and later it was changed to an honorary dental student society with
scholarship as a basis for admission. The Society Is named after Dr. Ferdinand ].
Gorgas, a pioneer in dental education and a great contributor to dental literature,
and it was with the idea of perpetuating his name that the society adopted it.
The Society makes for its objective the furtherance of dental knowledge by
discussion and lectures. Gorgas is comprised of junior and senior members whose
scholastic endeavors have placed them in at least the top third of their class.

rhe members of the Zeta Mu chapter of the Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity plan a calendar of events that reflects the basic
;enets of the fraternity. The fraternal aspect of Alpha Omega is demonstrated by the Big Brother Alumni-Undergraduate
Program which features a Big Brother dinner meeting. The Baltimore Alumni and Zeta Mu chapters hold several dinner
neetings together where guest speakers lecture on topics related to dentistry. Rush week 1980 was responsible for a large
ncrease in membership. Rush week events included a pizza lunch, a wine and cheese party and a bagel brunch at
3altimore's new showplace — Harborplace. Many seminars are held by Seniors to introduce Freshmen and Sophomores to
3asic Dental Science and to help Juniors with clinic. Social events included a summer picnic, the annual Welcome Back
Urab Feast, Clippers Hockey Night, an evening at Ski Liberty, and a winter pot luck dinner. The highlight of the social
alendar was the annual Spring Away Weekend which was held at a mountain resort in the Shenendoah Valley of Virginia.
This year Zeta Mu received the international first place award for chapter efficiency at the international convention in
Toronto. In addition, Zeta Mu was honored by the fact that its president, Charles Fine, served as the international
indergraduate representative during 1980 and in this capacity, led the undergraduate convention.

With a diversity of activities, Psi-Omegans once
again had an outstanding year at the Dental School.
From the Kennedy Center to white-v^ater rafting;
from the Constellation Room at the World Trade
Center to innertubing the Widowmaker, Psi-
Omegans were able to participate in sophisticated
and exciting events. The Seniors who will be
leaving will miss the camaraderie shown between

Sagrog is a professional society for the contraindicated dental student. Members are
dedicated to uphold the traditions of the Dental School in a nontraditional way. The stringent
membership requirements include the possession of ten or more blue slips, placement on
academic probation, and proof of having had less than 200 quality points by Christmas. Social
activities included ash collecting with overnight camping on Mount Saint Helens and tubing
through the Bermuda Triangle. The year was highlighted by our first annual blue slip bonfire.
Note: An iatrogenic ribbon can be added to diplomas for an additional fee.
